Chapter 2: Deposition of Mudstones and Shales Deposition of Mudstones and Shales: Overview, Problems, and Challenges

چکیده

As pointed out in the introduction to this book, shales contain the lion’s share of earth history that is recorded in sedimentary rocks. Understanding their deposition is key to the reconstruction of past oceans, landscapes, climates, and climatic cycles. Yet, whereas students of sandstones and carbonates have been able to learn a great deal about the deposition of these rocks from studying bedforms and sedimentary structures in the context of experimental data and direct observations in modern environments (e.g. Harms et al., 1982; Friedman et al., 1992), the situation is not as fortunate when we examine experimental and observational data to assess the significance of sedimentary features in finegrained terrigenous clastics.

U.S. Geological Survey Circular 946, p. 29-33. 6. MASSIVE MUDSTONES IN BASIN ANALYSIS AND PALEOCLIMATIC INTERPRETATION OF THE NEWARK

Massive red or gray mudstones make up much of the fine-grained sedimentary rocks of the Newark Supergroup. In fact, the upper third of most sedimentary cycles in the fine-grained facies of most Newark basins is massive mudstone (division 3 of Olsen, 1984). Massive mudstones have not, however, been studied or described nearly as fully as conglomerates, sandstones, and laminated shales. This lack...

Introduction Cyclic Sedimentation of Appalachian Devonian and Midcontinent Pennsylvanian Black Shales: Analysis of Ancient Marine Anoxic Systems

Ancient organic-rich mudstones (black shales) are the most important type of source rock for oil and gas. Black shales are, however, highly variable in their lithologic and geochemical character and in the environmental controls responsible for their formation. Although water-column stratification and bottomwater oxygen depletion are features common to most environments favoring accumulation of...

Introduction and Overview

The term "black shale" is a common expression widely used to describe any dark~olored, fine-grained sedimentary rock relatively rich in organic matter. As defined by Weissert (1981), the range of organic carbon in black shales is between 1 and 30%, but values outside this range exist. The term usually connotes at least partial lithification, yet this may not be true in young, shallow sediments....

PERMIAN-TRIASSIC BOUNDARY OF INDIAN SUBCONTINENT AND ITS INTERCONTINENTAL CORRELATION

The Permian-Triassic boundary in the Himalayas is reviewed and discussed in the light of palaeontologic and stratigraphic data collected during the past two and a half decades from Kashmir, Spiti and Nepal. The deposition of the Kuling Shales and their equivalents in different parts of the Himalayas was followed by shallowing and regression of the sea. Sedimentation was interrupted at the t...
